Tools & upkeep

Choose and use a small set of garden tools

Start with the actual job: a hand trowel handles small planting holes, a fork loosens soil and bypass secateurs cut suitable small living stems.

When to do it

When a job needs a tool you do not already have.

What you need

  • A trowel, watering can and gloves for small jobs
  • Secateurs or a fork where the task requires them

How to do it

  1. Start with the actual job: a hand trowel handles small planting holes, a fork loosens soil and bypass secateurs cut suitable small living stems.
  2. Choose a comfortable grip and manageable weight. Check blade condition, handles and the manufacturer’s cutting capacity.
  3. Work from stable footing with hands and feet clear of the tool’s path. Use help or a different tool rather than forcing an undersized one.
  4. Clean, dry and store after use. Borrowing or repairing a suitable tool can avoid an unnecessary purchase.

What success looks like

  • The tool completes the job without excessive force or loss of control.

Watch out for

  • Using secateurs on branches beyond their capacity.
  • Buying a large kit before knowing what is needed.
