Getting started

Sow into warm soil. Grow plants in a block of short rows rather than a single long row to help wind pollination; leave room for full-sized plants.

The right conditions

Choose a sunny, sheltered site with fertile, well-drained soil. Sweet corn needs warmth and adequate moisture to develop a good crop.

As it grows

Keep weeds down and water during dry weather, especially around flowering and cob development. Check seed instructions about separating varieties, since cross-pollination can affect kernel quality.

Ready to harvest

When the silks brown, check a cob: kernels should be plump and release milky juice when pressed. Pick promptly at this stage and use soon after harvest for best sweetness.
