Getting started
Raise seedlings from seed in a warm, bright place. Move them into the garden only after the soil has warmed and frost risk has passed.
The right conditions
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, freely draining soil. Eggplant needs sustained warmth and may struggle in a short, cool growing season.
As it grows
Keep plants growing steadily with adequate moisture. Support stems if the fruit load makes them lean, and avoid leaving plants crowded in small pots.
Ready to harvest
Pick fruit while the skin is glossy and the flesh is firm, at a useful size for the variety. Cut the woody stalk rather than pulling fruit from the plant.

Check the plant guide: tomatoes colour at ripeness, while zucchini, cucumbers and many eggplants are usually picked immature and tender.
