Getting started
Sow seed directly into its growing position. A short row or a few plants is enough to begin; use your zone's sowing window to plan another small sowing.
The right conditions
Prepare a well-drained bed suitable for vegetables. Keep the seedbed moist while plants establish, and leave room to reach the plants for regular picking.
As it grows
Remove competing weeds and water when the soil is drying. Decide whether you want leaves or seed: plants kept for seed need to be allowed to flower and mature.
Ready to harvest
Pick a modest amount of fresh leaf while leaving the plant growing. For seed, collect the heads when the fruits have turned brown, before they shed; dry them thoroughly and separate the seeds.
