Getting started
Plant a named low-chill nursery cultivar at its approved establishment period.
The right conditions
Acid soil or ericaceous potting mix, reliable moisture, sun and enough cultivar-specific winter chill.
As it grows
Mulch with acidic organic matter, use suitable fertiliser sparingly and protect ripening fruit from birds.
Ready to harvest
Pick only fully blue berries; flavour improves after colour change.
Important cautions
Low-chill does not mean no chill; tropical districts remain unsuitable under the approved matrix.
Related how-to guides
Prepare suitable conditions for blueberries
Choose the blueberry group suited to your climate using the existing plant guide; soil acidity cannot compensate for the wrong chilling requirement.
Check a crop’s pollination needs
Identify the crop and cultivar: self-fertile, self-incompatible, separate male and female plants, and seedless fruiting types have different needs.
Plant guidance: Desk-reviewed under the approved horticultural-synthesis method; not field-tested. Planting windows are a guide rather than a rule.
