Rewet soil that sheds water
Check beneath the surface in several places.
When to do it
When water runs off but the soil beneath remains dry.
What you need
- Trowel
- Gentle watering source
- Labelled soil wetter only if needed
How to do it
- Check beneath the surface in several places. Distinguish dry, water-repellent patches from soil that is already saturated.
- Lift matted mulch and direct a small amount of water slowly onto the dry area.
- Apply short, gentle passes with pauses. Recheck beside the roots to see whether water has penetrated rather than escaped down cracks.
- If repellency persists, choose a soil wetter labelled for this use and edible garden, and follow its rate and watering directions. Do not use household detergent.
- Restore loose mulch once the soil is moist. Monitor the area and avoid repeated severe drying where the plant needs even moisture.
What success looks like
- Water moistens the root area instead of bypassing it.
Watch out for
- Adding wetter to waterlogged soil.
- Flooding the bed without checking where the water went.
