Seeds & planting
Start seeds in trays and care for them
Read the packet before sowing.
When to do it
When the plant’s sowing window and intended transplant conditions allow.
What you need
- Clean pots or modules with drainage
- Fresh seed-raising mix
- Seed, labels and gentle water
How to do it
- Read the packet before sowing. Root crops that dislike disturbance are often simpler sown directly.
- Moisten the mix and fill containers without packing it hard. Sow at the specified depth and density, then label.
- Water with a fine rose or briefly from below; allow excess to drain. Keep the germination layer moist, not constantly saturated.
- Provide the packet’s temperature and light conditions. Remove a humidity lid once seedlings emerge and give bright suitable light and airflow.
- Check daily. Water as needed, turn trays if leaning, and move crowded seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle. Harden off before outdoor planting.
What success looks like
- Seedlings are compact and upright, with healthy new leaves.
Watch out for
- Leaving seedlings sealed under a hot lid.
- Sowing too densely or feeding strongly before needed.

Prick out and pot on seedlings
Moisten the seedlings and prepare filled pots with a hole deep enough for the roots.
Harden off seedlings before planting out
Choose mild conditions and start in sheltered light shade for a short daytime visit.
Work out why seeds have not germinated
Check the date and the variety’s expected germination period; some seeds are naturally slow.
