Plant techniques
Train cucumbers and support heavy fruit
Check the variety: climbing cucumbers can use a trellis, while compact or trailing types may be managed differently.
When to do it
As a climbing variety begins extending shoots.
What you need
- Stable trellis
- Soft ties
- Broad breathable slings if necessary
How to do it
- Check the variety: climbing cucumbers can use a trellis, while compact or trailing types may be managed differently.
- Install the support before roots spread. Guide the young main stem gently and tie loosely where tendrils do not yet hold.
- Keep stems spaced for access and airflow. Do not copy a pruning system intended for a different greenhouse or outdoor variety.
- If large fruit strains the stem, cradle it in a broad breathable sling fixed to the support, leaving room for growth and checking regularly.
- Harvest at the variety’s tender stage. Follow its pollination instructions: some parthenocarpic cucumbers set fruit without pollination and should not be hand-pollinated.
What success looks like
- Stems and fruit are carried without constricting ties or slings.
Watch out for
- Removing flowers or side shoots by a universal rule.
- Tying the fruit itself tightly to a wire.
